Ireland, HMP Maghaberry: Screws forced to flee after prisoners set fires and doors open

Screws were reportedly forced to flee after 100 prisoners’ cell doors spring open during a weekend of turmoil in a maximum security jail. They were said to have been stretched to their limits as inmates started small fires. It is claimed they were lit in protest at searches for drugs, and a short time later it is alleged two officers had to run for safety when cell doors suddenly sprung open.

The glitch happened in the Quoile House block of Maghaberry jail in Northern Ireland.

“The jail is awash with drugs. It is out of control. There were a number of fires, mostly on Sunday. That’s nothing other than prisoners hitting back against searches.”
